Classrooms today look remarkably different from even a decade ago. Where chalkboards once stood, smartboards and tablets are now part of the everyday necessity. In the UK, 64% of schools make routine use of technology in class, and the majority tell us it is helping learners be better prepared for the future.

Educators are equally positive; digital resources let them customise lessons for each pupil, offering extra guidance where it is needed while allowing others to tackle advanced content without delay. Collaboration, too, has broadened.

Platforms like Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams allow students to exchange drafts, receive instant feedback, and continue projects outside the four walls of the school. In that sense, the classroom is now the space between the bells as much as it is the physical room. Yet modernisation has not swept in without hurdles. Access to reliable devices and stable internet remains patchy in some areas, creating real disparities in what students experience. Responding, the UK government recently announced a £45 million funding package to upgrade school connectivity, a clear signal that bridging the digital divide has moved to the centre of the agenda.

Education is evolving at pace. Today’s classrooms are not simply catching up to technology; they are using it as a catalyst to redefine the dynamics of teaching and learning.
